Stoner Classic: How to Make a Gravity Bong in Seven Easy Steps

Gravity is a naturally occurring phenomenon that rules the world as we know it. A gravity bong is a phenomenally effective way to smoke weed (that also happens to rock!). There is a time and a place for everything, and using a gravity bong to get high is an extraordinary time and place in one's life. We're going to equip you with the knowledge you need to create a gravity bong that gets the job done!
What Is a Gravity Bong?
A gravity bong, also known as a geeb, is a cannabis consumption method that uses two empty plastic bottles to funnel smoke through water and push it into the consumer's lungs. Before we embark on our gravity adventure, let's take a step back to understand more about the mythical gravity bong. Although its origins are shrouded in mystery, it likely came into being when a physicist (or at least a physics student) almost ran out of weed—but needed to get super stoned. Necessity: the mother of all invention.
Disclaimer: you will not actually depart Earth's orbit when you smoke a gravity bong… but you might feel like you are!
It's important to note when learning how to make a gravity bong that gravity bongs allow the smoker to extract the maximum amount of mind-altering effects from a minimum amount of cannabis. Although you should share the experience with friends, it is, at its core, a solo stoner mission: each hit from a gravity bong will clear the entire bowl of weed. It's the ultimate one-and-done cannabis smoking method.
Gravity bongs come in different shapes and sizes, but they all operate under the principle of negative pressure to work. Our method of how to make a water bowl gravity bong uses household items to create a powerful weed-smoking option. A gravity bong relies on displaced water to fill the smoker's lungs to maximum capacity with sweet, sweet THC, CBD, terpenes, and all the other cannabinoids.
How to Use a Gravity Bong
Although rudimentary in appearance, gravity bongs are not for the novice smoker. Proceed with caution when using a gravity bong, especially for the first time! While a rite of passage for many, this smoking weed method can be dangerous to the uninitiated due to the amount of smoke that will end up in your lungs. You will cough! But you will also be very, very stoned shortly after that.
When the water retreats from your gravity bong and smoke fill your lungs through the power of physics, you will probably get lightheaded. Have a buddy around to make sure you don't pass out because it's a risk with gravity bongs. Keep a glass of water nearby to quell your angry throat, too. Some smokers even experience hallucinations after a huge rip.
No matter if it's your first time or five hundredth time, respect the gravity bong—and your body—and smoke responsibly.
How To Make A Gravity Bong
Using responsibly a gravity bong can help you get the most out of a small stash. Pro tip: you don't have to take the entire hit at once—there's nothing cool about passing out after a too large of a rip. Here's how to make your own:
Things You'll Need
- Plastic bottle with a screw top
- Scissors/knife
- Bowl/stem (found at a dispensary or head shop, optional)
- Aluminum Foil
- Toothpick
- Lighter
- Weed (a grinder wouldn't hurt either!)
- Receptacle larger than the plastic bottle: a larger plastic bottle or a bucket
- Water
The Process
Step One: Gather Your Supplies
The plastic bottle size will directly correlate to the amount of smoke that will be filling your lungs. Choose wisely, and don't let your eyes be bigger than your lungs.
Step Two: Cut The Smaller Bottle
With your scissors or knife, cut the bottom of the smaller plastic bottle. Make sure not to cut too much off the base; the more of the bottle that remains, the larger the hit you'll get.
Step Three: Cut The Larger Bottle
Next, go ahead and cut the bottom off of your larger bottle and fill it with water. If you decide to use a bucket, fill the bucket with water.
Step Four: Make A Hole In The Bottle Cap
Unscrew the smaller bottle's lid and use your lighter to burn a small hole through the plastic cap. You can also use scissors to poke a hole - whichever method suits your fancy. Just make sure the cap's hole is large enough for airflow but small enough that your man-made bowl piece doesn't fall through.
Step Five: Place Your Bowl Piece
The next step is to make and then place your bowl piece into the hole you created with the lighter or other tools. If you bought your bowl piece from a dispensary or head shop, set it through the whole. Do this while the plastic is still warm so it will slightly adhere to the bowl or stem, creating a more secure receptacle.
If you plan to create the bowl yourself, wrap the bottle cap in aluminum foil, shaping the foil to make a small "bowl" divot for your cannabis. Cut the excess foil and reshape the bowl as needed. Then, poke mini holes in the aluminum foil with a toothpick.
Step Six: Load It Up
Fill the bowl or stem with evenly ground weed.
Step Seven: Submerge Smaller Bottle
First, fill your larger receptacle with water up to the point where the plastic bottle curves toward the lid. Ensuring that the cap is not screwed onto the plastic bottle, submerge the plastic bottle into the larger receptacle. Once it is, carefully screw the top of the bottle back on.
Step Eight: Light It Up
Light the bowl and slowly lift the plastic bottle out of the water simultaneously as it fills with smoke*. Grip the lid of the bottle for maximum smoothness. Do not pull so far that the bottom of the bottle comes out of the water because then your precious smoke will escape!
*If the small bottle didn't fill up with smoke, make sure the cap is tightly screwed on.
Step Nine: Unscrew The Cap
Once your bottle fills with smoke, carefully unscrew the cap - while holding the plastic bottle - and put your mouth over the bottle opening.
Step 10: Push The Smaller Bottle Into Water
Place your lips to the mouth of the bottle, then inhale as you push the bottle back down into the water. Breathe deeply, cough, and enjoy the reward of learning how to make a gravity bong!
Do Gravity Bongs Get You Higher?
In short, yes. Gravity bonds do get you higher than a glass bong. Gravity bongs force heavily concentrated smoke into your lungs, filling them beyond the average hit from a pipe or joint. When you inhale the smoke, you are practically breathing in the smoke from an entire bowl of cannabis in one go. For that reason, a gravity bong may not be the wisest decision for some cannabis beginners.
