Make Your Own Space Cakes

Sometimes you just want to get off this planet for a little while, but until SpaceX starts accepting civilian applicants, your options are slightly limited. Because temporarily leaving this plane of existence may not be available to you as of yet, may we suggest whipping up a batch of Space Cakes?

But What Are Space Cakes?

Space Cakes are cannabis edibles in the form of a tasty baked good. Space Cakes traditionally come in the form of a brownie or one of its variants, but, honestly, your options here are bound only by your half-baked imagination. But why does consuming cannabis in edible form send you to outer space while a cheeky toke will only put you in Earth’s Lower Orbit?

The Magical Space Cakes Effect

Something very special happens when you cook with cannabis. Raising the temperature of weed causes a higher level of decarboxylation, the chemical process by which THC is activated. Some folks ration that combustion (smoking) wastes a lot of the psychoactive ingredient of weed, and, while that is partially true, the real reason behind your stellar level of stonedness from Space Cakes happens on a molecular level.

Oral ingestion of THC causes it to turn into a compound known as 11-hydroxy-THC—which you take straight to the dome. This powerful iteration of your favorite intoxicant wastes no time in attaching itself to your cannabinoid receptors, and thus, edibles will straight throttle your mind to the outer limits of reality. Thanks, science!

Check out our recipe on how to make cannabutter and you’ll be ready to elevate your eating to interdimensional levels.

Bananas can be used instead of eggs and soy milk instead of cow’s milk to make this cannabis edible vegan-friendly! Heck yeah. Feel like adding star sprinkles to the batter? Go for it! Want to add some food grade glitter to the frosting? Who are we to stop you?! Substitute almond extract for vanilla in the batter and switch to your favorite chocolate-hazelnut spread for the frosting. Live a little. It’s 2018, and sometimes it’s just best to forget the debilitating realities that define our daily lives.

For the cupcakes you will need:

- 1 ¾ teaspoons baking powder

- 1 cup granulated sugar

- ½ cup Crisco

- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

- ½ teaspoon lemon extract

For the frosting, use any store-bought frosting of your choice!

The Method

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Set aside.

In a separate large bowl, incorporate the sugar with Crisco and cannabutter. Add eggs, milk, vanilla, lemon extract, and the flour mixture one at a time. Mix thoroughly.

Grease and flour your cupcake pans. You could use cupcake tin liners (preferably eco-friendly reusable ones!) if you’re feeling fancy / not like adding more fat to your already astronomically decadent snack.

Fill each tin three-quarters full with cake batter to prevent overflow during baking.

Bake for 1 hour. Low and slow is the name of the game when it comes to canna-baking because high temperatures will render your creation virtually ineffective.

Let the cupcakes cool. Completely! Pop them out of their onto a baking rack if you want to expedite this process.

Once cool, frost Space Cakes... and enjoy!
